Achievements

Bringing Peace

Sri Lanka fought a bitter war with the LTTE for almost 30 years and all previous Governments gave priority to the war.

International Relationship

President Rajapaksa follows a pragmatic foreign policy with a commitment to the principles of Non-Alignment, and the maintenance of friendly relations with all countries, strongly supportive of the United Nations and its initiatives for development and progress, and seeking international cooperation in the fight against terror both in Sri Lanka and elsewhere.

Agriculture

Our farmers undergo great sufferings due to the scarcity of water, non availability of land, crop losses, poor market for their produce and lack of access to technology.

Education

In line with the "Mahinda Chinthanaya policy" to ensure the quality of free education, a sum of Rs 3,387, 582 and Rs 1,649 mn was spent on provision of text books, uniforms and nutrition programmes respectively in 2008.

Information and Communication Technology

"Our government accords very high priority to ICT education for our youth and will in the next decade invest vast funds to ensure that every child will be imparted with ICT skills. ICT will also help Sri Lankans to truly integrate and work towards becoming a cohesive nation.

Transport

The government invested Rs 14,409 mn on the development of the transport sector in 2005 and this has increased to Rs 27,323 mn in 2008. This indicates an increase of ninety percent.

Health Care

During the last four years, the number of doctors increased up to 12,193 with the recruitment of 900 new medical officers and 301 medical officers were given opportunities to participate in foreign postgraduate degree programmes, to overcome problems of dearth of specialists.

Rural Development

During the last four years Government has implemented many projects to expand the infrastructure facilities at the rural level.

North and East Development

Achieving the primary ambition of the nation, Northern and Eastern provinces were completely liberated from terrorists and resettlement in the Eastern Province was successfully completed by resettling 206,000 internally displaced persons in their own places.

Expressways and Highways

Another development project that goes hand in hand with these two projects is the ongoing Colombo-Matara toll expressway to be completed next year.

Power and Energy

Similarly, Coal Fired Power plants in Norochcholai and Sampur in Trincomalee were also launched and the public would enjoy the fruits of these projects in a few years' time.

Ports and Aviation

Hambantota was one of the most underprivileged areas in Sri Lanka with the least development taking place.
